Cleft Sweet Chestnut fence around a lake near Devizes

A couple of jobs this week:

  • A Cleft sweet chestnut fence around a lake near Devizes and
  • a guard rail fence was repaired in Westbury
All with no raincoat required !!
March 2024

Cleft rail fences, also known as chestnut fences, are constructed using split logs. We used 2.4m. Commonly, these logs have pre-shaped ends that fit snugly into mortices in the fence posts. This design allows the rails to slot into the timber posts easily.  Sweet chestnut does not require any treatment to help improve its lifespan –  the timber contains natural preservatives.  There is no industry standard for the length of the logs given their curved and bendy nature.

Replacement gates for West Lavington Parish Council

Replacement gates were erected today for West Lavington Parish Council.
The gates are sited at the entrance to the Remembrance Avenue of trees planted to commemorate 25 members of the village who went to serve their country in WW1 but did not return.
The site lies between the village and Salisbury Plain military training estate.

Fencing & scrub clearance near Marlborough December 2023

With all posts now in, there’s a suitable point to break for Christmas.  a project which has been challenging at times.

A  little more scrub to tidy up in 2024 and a few 1000m of netting to pull up.

The Compact Protech post driver is off to pastures new in January,  with a new one ready to be collected.

New sign writing not so visible now!

Timber Stack in Hampshire Dec 2023

The stack of timber and pictures do not do this project justice.  We removed 15 very large poplars from a narrow and sometimes waterlogged strip of land between a security fence and an SSSI canal, then through a very small gate.

A great result which can only be described as a job that never went wrong but had its challenges!

Well Done – Scott, Cameron, Antony, Samuel and the team.

9000m replacement stock fencing project starting June 2023

9000m replacement stock fencing project over the next few months
Close to the ancient Wansdyke (a series of early medieval defensive earthworks consisting of a ditch and a running embankment from the ditch spoil, with the ditching facing north).
The name is taken from Woden’s Dyke.
Not a bad view, either!  Our Evo 3 Protech is making a 500-metre roll of netting look quite small!!
