Proper mulcher kicking up the dust clearing harvesting residue this morning on an approx 5 ha of area. This followed tree harvester works, the residue form tree felling, brambles and stumps.

Bramble bashing today in Malmesbury, clearing an overgrown slope for the new owners.
It was a 2- 3 ha bank which we cleared of bramble and left patches; the area was checked for wildlife as works progressed. The site had a footpath along one edge so unsuitable for goats; the area was not a total clearance – approx 30 % of the bramble was left untouched. We will return and treat the regrowth from the roots over the spring / summer next year. The cleared areas will be managed to create a varied mosaic of improved habitiat, given the river and other features adjacent to the site. Conservation at work !

During the heatwave in August, we were called in to help ARTIOS to clear fire breaks on the impact area on SPTA (Salisbury Plain training area).
Following EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) clearance, we flailed off grass and vegetation which had accumulated, creating a large fuel load for fires.

Somewhere in here is a gas pipeline apparently! Clearing the under growth before timber harvesting with our Robo Flail
Something different today: clearing a bund at Wilts Air Ambulance and removing old weeds and leaving tidy for the “Summer at the Base Day” on Saturday 22nd August..
A bund is simply a mounded-up area of earth that can serve many purposes – it can cut down wind, noise, and visual disturbance, and create a ‘softer’ look. And it can of course come from building works to save removing material from site!

Charlie with the RoboFlail is busy this week, clearing scrubby banks near Castle Combe as part of a grassland restoration project.
Here, the video shows the Valtra 121 is fitted with a cut and collect flail to clear 5-year old scrub regrowth to help the chalk grassland and nearby Juniper. The site was cleared 5 years ago. The ability of the machine to collect the cut materials prevents the nutrient level from being raised in the soil. This helps with chalk grassland and wildflowers as they prefer a low level of soil fertility to prevent being outcompeted by other species.
